Nahariya was founded in 1935 by German Jewish refugees and named after the Ga’aton stream, which runs down its main boulevard to the sea. It is the northernmost city on Israel’s coast, about 30 km north of Haifa.

Sderot Ga’aton, shaded by eucalyptus trees and lined with cafés, leads to a seafront park, a promenade, two public beaches and a small marina. North of the city, a new neighborhood is rising beside Achziv beach.
