Tiberias was founded around 20 CE on the western shore of the Kinneret (Sea of Galilee). The Mishnah and much of the Jerusalem Talmud were compiled here, and it is one of Judaism’s four holy cities.
Today it is the region’s commercial center, with a lakeside promenade, hot springs at Hammat Tiberias, and large new neighborhoods on the hills above the old city, including HaMoshava on the Poriya ridge.
